How are gendered cultural Jewish identities constructed and negotiated within different media constellations?
On the basis of concrete examples, I will analyse the contemporary representation of cultural Jewish identities in (audio-)visual media from the perspective of Jewish Visual Culture Studies. Alongside the reciprocal entanglement of different categories of identity, such as ethnicity, religion, gender, class or body(images), I will place special emphasis on the complex connection between Jewishness and queerness that has been common since the 19th century and that finds its expression in the idea of a transgressive, deviant sexuality embodied by Jewish women and men. My primary corpus consists of selected autobiographical works by Jewish-American comics artist Aline Kominsky-Crumb, the US-American Amazon Originals-series TRANSPARENT (since 2014), and the European film production DIE BLUMEN VON GESTERN (AT/GER/FR 2017). In all these examples, being ‚Jewish‘ is constructed and critically reflected not only as ‚the other‘, but also as a form of queerness.
